4 Different Types of Paving

Superior Aggregates can help you choose the best solution for paving your commercial or residential property. Take a look below at four types of pavement options.

Sealcoat

One of the most common solutions for pavement liquid sealer, sealcoat is used as a protective coating in order to extend the life of pavement. There are a few different types of pavement sealcoat and it’s important to know which one is best for your specific project needs.

Refined tar-based sealcoat is best for protection against water penetrating the first layer and resistance against chemicals affecting the pavement surface. Its protection can last up to 5 years. Asphalt-based sealer offers less protection than tar-based sealer, however it can offer best results up to 3 years. Petroleum-based is the medium-level sealant between the other two previously mentioned. These sealants are applied with either pressurized spray equipment or with squeegees. The
application process is usually two coats applied over a period of 24 to 48 hours.

Tack coat

Tack coat is most often applied between layers to prevent slipping and to protect from moisture and bacteria affecting the strength of subsequent layers. The three classes of asphalt can be uses for a tack coat: emulsions, paving grades and cutbacks. Cutbacks are more uncommonly used while asphalt emulsions are often the preferred choice. These combine a paving grade asphalt binder diluted with water and a mixing agent. A clean, dry surface for application is essential for layer bonding.

Chip seal

Chip seal is an excellent option to seal cracks, narrow ones especially like alligator cracks, bind together and strengthen the surface and underlying base of the pavement.

Chip seal is applied usually on a one-time basis by equipment trucks through a two-step process 1) asphalt emulsion 2) a layer of crushed rock. Chip seal applications contains particles of paving asphalt, water, a mixing agent or surfactant, polymer (as a hardener) and an additive (to soften the pavement to bond).

Slurry seal

A cold mix paving system, slurry seal can fix various pavement problems. It’s a resurfacing treatment over 24 hours that reduces cracks and voids, surface seals, weather protects, uniforms color and adds texture to your pavement. Materials used in slurry sealant include aggregate, asphalt emulsion, fillers and water. In most cases, slurry seal is affordable and effective to use. Its thick application enhances the value and appearance of any property and lasts up to 7 years.
